Teen Parents Win Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy Award

Edmonton, November 12 2009,

The Terra ambassadors won the “Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy” award at the 11th Annual AFP Edmonton & Area National Philanthropy Day luncheon and awards on November 12, 2009 at the Shaw Conference Centre. The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) present this annual award to an individual or youth group who have engaged in acts of charity, give their time and talent to better their community and set an example to encourage other youth to create or join in philanthropic activities. Terra ambassadors were one of five nominees in this category.

Terra Launch New Diaper Drive: Baby Heroes

A baby can go through 200 diapers a month, which can add up to a tremendous cost for financially strapped teen parents trying to build a future for themselves.

On Wednesday, a local centre for pregnant and parenting teens launched a diaper drive in support of some 600 young parents the nonprofit agency Terra works with each year.

Terra Wins Gold Laurel Award

Terra – Centre for pregnant and parenting teens was honoured at the Laurel Awards for innovation and creativity in not-for-profit organizations. Terra won gold for its youth leadership program, where young mothers develop public speaking and advocacy skills.

Karen Mottershead is September 2009 Global Woman of Vision

Karen Mottershead feels blessed to have grown up with strong, resilient, inspiring women who taught her about seizing life’s opportunities.
At an age when many people start to slow down, Karen’s mother graduated from university. She sailed and biked around the world and ran a little newspaper in Uranium City, a fly-in community in northwestern Saskatchewan. Even today, at 75, when many of her peers are being cared for, she’s still caring for others and working with people with disabilities.

Bureaucratic maze daunting for teen moms looking for help

EDMONTON — Juelle Smalridge was overwhelmed when she became a mother at age 17, but she juggled her new parental responsibilities with her studies and finished high school, something not many teen parents in Alberta are able to do.

Smalridge, who is now 18 with a 14-month-old son, is one of the successful students at Braemar, a school partnered with Terra – Centre for pregnant and parenting teens in Edmonton.

Teenage mothers get help to finish school

Terra Centre, Braemar School team up for young moms struggling with adult responsibilities

Braemar School, along with the Terra Centre for pregnant and parenting teens, hosted a Mother’s Day breakfast for the 92 teen moms who attend the school. The Terra Centre and Braemar School are partners with the same goal – to support and encourage young parents to complete their high school education, says Karen Mottershead, Terra executive director.

Teen Moms Give Back to the Community

April 29 2009, Braemar high school students put on their cooking mitts for charity on Global Youth Service Day last week.

The north-side school for pregnant and parenting teens drummed up close to $900 with a student-run pancake
breakfast and raffle fundraiser to go toward a large industrial pancake griddle for Meals on Wheels.
