Terra is a dymanic community-based organization that responds to the issues and challenges that young people face related to pregnancy and parenting. For over 10 years the agency has been providing housing support to teen moms and young dads under 24 years of age. Reporting to the Housing Coordinator, the Family Housing Worker works at Hope Terrace, a 13-suite apartment building for young parents.

The Family Housing Worker is a full time position (37.5 hours per week) with a schedule that includes at least two evenings and one half-day on Saturday or Sunday each week.

Responsibilities

  • Receives and responds to initial housing inquiries from potential tenants, staff, or the community regarding housing opportunities at Hope Terrace
  • Screening and assessing the suitability of potential tenants
  • Provides individual and group support services to tenants
  • Liaisons with the caretaker to identify tenant issues, and facilitates meetings to resolve tenant and building issues
  • Develops and conducts after-hours activities for tenants based on identified needs in areas such as cooking, budgeting for basics, toddler time, parent time, and career planning
  • Advocates on behalf of Terra clients and supports resource searches to access affordable housing
  • Manages the collecting and receipting of rent from tenants
  • Compiles monthly statistical information and maintains files and records on each tenant
  • Participates as an active member of the Terra Housing team

Qualifications

This position requires a self-motivated, resourceful problem solver who enjoys working with teens. The ideal candidate has:

  • A diploma or degree in Child and Youth Care, Social Work, or a discipline directly related to human services
  • Experience working with young people
  • An understanding of the needs and issues related to teen pregnancy and parenting
  • Experience in assessing client needs and identifying appropriate community resources
  • The ability to develop and deliver group programs that enhance basic life skills
  • Strong facilitation skills
  • Experience with computer databases
  • A vehicle to transport clients and children
